Savour it the Right Way - International Sushi Day

While you won’t be refused your serving of sushi for not knowing the right way to eat it, knowing the correct way just enhances the experience of this cultural pride. On the International Sushi Day, here’s a refreshment course for when you sit in front of your platter of sushi. The rules of eating are designed to make the food taste better. Here’s how:

 Chopsticks and Fingers
Sushi originated as finger food, so it’s completely ok to pick up a piece with your fingers! If you are using chopsticks, like an Asian expert, then remember to never rub them at the table or place them flat on the mat.

The Sauces
Typically, you’ll be served wasabi and soy. The sauces are served to you separately, to be dipped into, separately! Don’t mix your sauces in a bowl because chefs take it as a sign that the delicateness of the fish doesn’t matter to you and you haven’t liked their preparations.

Dipping the sushi
Whether you choose to eat with your hands or chopsticks, dip only a small part of the fish side into the sauce. There are reasons for not dipping the rice. One, the rice is already expertly flavoured. Two, it may soak up too much sauce and overpower the fish. Three, you don’t want rice particles in your sauce!
Taking the right bite
If you have sushi rolls in front of you, it’s fine to put the entire piece in your mouth or bite it the way you want. But, if you have ordered the sushi nigiri, eat it the traditional way.
The fish side should face your tongue and be tasted first and the rice part should follow it. That’s the best way to savour the relationship between the rice and the fish.

Drinking with sushi
Traditionally, diners would not drink sake with sushi, because both are made from rice and thought to interfere with one another. You can choose to go with green tea which goes well and doubles as a palate cleanser.
Also, if you are ordering a variety of sushi, start with the mildest fish and move to the heavier flavours like tuna. If all of this seems too much, just let the chefs know you need their guidance. They’ll be more than happy to share their love for sushi with you!

With all this is mind, make your way to Shiro, for the most authentic experience and some valuable sushi lessons, if you need!

International Sushi Day

The concept of eating meals with vinegar rice and raw fish has been around in Japan for centuries now. Today, Sushi is on top of everyone’s mind when asked about Japanese cuisine.

Something as cultural and as artistic as sushi deserves its own special day and here it is! The world will be celebrating International Sushi Day on 18th June. The art of making sushi is one that calls for and is respected, not only in Japan but amongst chefs and connoisseurs all around the world.

A true sushi experience is unforgettable. There are so many different types of sushi, depending on the way the rice is prepared, which fish is used and where in Japan it originates from. It can make your head spin - the amount of details that go into your bite sized Asian delicacy!

For food that is so complicated and wonderfully exquisite, one day of dedication isn’t enough. We say all of you who love sushi should give it some special attention on this day and everyone who hasn’t yet experienced an authentic sushi meal should use it to dive into a new experience.

Miso Soup's Health Benefits

Miso is a paste made from soybeans, sea salt, and koji (a mold starter), and often mixed with rice, barley or other grains. The mixture is allowed to ferment for 3 months to 3 years, which produces an enzyme-rich food. The binding agent zybicolin in miso is effective in detoxifying and eliminating elements that are taken into the body through industrial pollution, radioactivity and artificial chemicals in the soil and food system.

Miso has been a staple in Chinese and Japanese diets dating back approximately 2,500 years. Today, most of the Japanese population begins their day with a warm bowl of miso soup believed to stimulate the digestion and energize the body. When purchasing Miso, avoid the pasteurized version and spend your money on the live enzyme-rich product, which is also loaded with beneficial microorganisms.

The 10 scientifically researched benefits of eating Miso:

1. Contains all essential amino acids, making it a complete protein.

2. Stimulates the secretion of digestive fluids in the stomach.

3. Restores beneficial probiotics to the intestines.

4. Aids in the digestion and assimilation of other foods in the intestines.

5. Is a good vegetable-quality source of B vitamins (especially B12).

6. Strengthens the quality of blood and lymph fluid.

7. Reduces risk for breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers.

8. Protects against radiation due to dipilocolonic acid, an alkaloid that chelates heavy metals and discharges them from the body.

9. Strengthens the immune system and helps to lower LDL cholesterol.

10. High in antioxidants that protects against free radicals.

Miso has a wonderful sweet/salty flavor that can be used in a wide variety of recipes. The color of Miso can vary from light yellow, good to use in a sweet Miso soup during warm weather, to a deep dark brown with earthy tones and hearty flavor, which can be cooked with cubed root vegetables, wakame sea vegetable and dark leafy greens during the colder months. When cooking with Miso use just enough to enhance flavor and avoid overpowering the dish with a strong salty taste.
