Savour it the Right Way - International Sushi Day

While you won’t be refused your serving of sushi for not knowing the right way to eat it, knowing the correct way just enhances the experience of this cultural pride. On the International Sushi Day, here’s a refreshment course for when you sit in front of your platter of sushi. The rules of eating are designed to make the food taste better. Here’s how:

 Chopsticks and Fingers
Sushi originated as finger food, so it’s completely ok to pick up a piece with your fingers! If you are using chopsticks, like an Asian expert, then remember to never rub them at the table or place them flat on the mat. 

The Sauces
Typically, you’ll be served wasabi and soy. The sauces are served to you separately, to be dipped into, separately! Don’t mix your sauces in a bowl because chefs take it as a sign that the delicateness of the fish doesn’t matter to you and you haven’t liked their preparations.

Dipping the sushi
Whether you choose to eat with your hands or chopsticks, dip only a small part of the fish side into the sauce. There are reasons for not dipping the rice. One, the rice is already expertly flavoured. Two, it may soak up too much sauce and overpower the fish. Three, you don’t want rice particles in your sauce!
Taking the right bite
If you have sushi rolls in front of you, it’s fine to put the entire piece in your mouth or bite it the way you want. But, if you have ordered the sushi nigiri, eat it the traditional way.
The fish side should face your tongue and be tasted first and the rice part should follow it. That’s the best way to savour the relationship between the rice and the fish.
Drinking with sushi
Traditionally, diners would not drink sake with sushi, because both are made from rice and thought to interfere with one another. You can choose to go with green tea which goes well and doubles as a palate cleanser.
Also, if you are ordering a variety of sushi, start with the mildest fish and move to the heavier flavours like tuna. If all of this seems too much, just let the chefs know you need their guidance. They’ll be more than happy to share their love for sushi with you!

Miso Soup's Health Benefits

Miso is a paste made from soybeans, sea salt, and koji (a mold starter), and often mixed with rice, barley or other grains. Shiro Hosts 2 Musical Sensations during VH1 SoundNation Awards

Shiro Mumbai and Delhi played host to two of the rocking performers on the international scene, Dualist Inquiry and Nucleya! The performance was organised VH1SoundNation powered by 100 Pipers India.

Dualist Inquiry is a guy who makes music while playing the guitar. He has a lot of fun doing what he does. His sound is broadly categorised as a fresh mix of live electronica and guitar-based rock, and has been steadily winning audiences over across the country. His debut release, Dualism EP (2011), and series of bootleg remixes that followed, received widespread critical acclaim and cemented his sound as one that is instantly recognisable and uniquely his. Dualist Inquiry is currently in the process of releasing Doppelganger, his widely-anticipated, first full-length album.

He has been the preferred supporting act for an impressive list of international producers and DJs touring India, including David Guetta, Fatboy Slim, Basement Jaxx, KOAN Sound and Hexstatic. In addition, he has performed internationally at the Berlin Music Week (2010), and the Great Escape Festival (2011) where he opened for Beardyman and the legendary DJ Shadow. 

Nucleya is a bass heavy electronic artist from New Delhi. He co-founded the Bandish Projekt in the late ‘90s and also has played a number of gigs across the country, including a set at The Bacardi Weekender 2011. He has performed at numerous music festivals around the world including Glastonbury, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Lille 3000 and the Electron Festival, where he performed alongside artists like Diplo and Modeselektor.

After leaving Bandish Projekt, Nucleya moved towards producing bass-heavy music. A collaborator (with Mou Sultana and Brooklyn Shanti) on season two of The Dewarists, Nucleya has also remixed a couple of Bollywood tracks and released a few remix albums. He also opened for David Guetta during the Eristoff Invasion Festival 2012.

Magnetic Mojo with Jojo Zolina

Shiro played host to Jojo Zolina. the man behind Madonna’s Canada branch of dance studio, Hard Candy. Jojo has trail-blazed a style and standard that has filtered itself into today’s mainstream dance world. With incredible artistry, he has reinvented a technique that has quickly become coveted by artists such as Madonna, La Roux, Michael Buble, and Lady Sovereign. His fluid, signature style has captured audiences internationally at events such as London and Paris Fashion Week. 

He is a known commodity in the dance industry worldwide earning the respect from the best in the business. Jojo is a dance alchemist, boldly melding elements of ethnic folk dance, hip hop, funk, vogueing, waacking, house, reggaeton, dancehall, contemporary, and salsa. He has studied under and worked with some of the most renowned names in the business from Martha Carter and Jennifer Mascall Modern Dance Companies to hip hop dance pioneers Buddha Stretch, Caleaf Sellers, Poppin’ Pete, Tyrone Proctor and Kelly Konno. Jojo brought this unique energy and vibe to the dance floor and had the Shiro crowd enjoying his dance style.
